The feline observes…

Axel: “Mom, what are you doing out there? It is cold outside.”
Mom: “Yeah, I know but the light is so nice out and I wanted the glitter on the pig to sparkle and the colors of the vintage sheets to be true and pretty!”
Axel: “The glitter is sparkling but I am unimpressed…”
Mom: “Just look at those those nostalgic patterns and beautiful colors!”
Axel: “They would look much better folded in a sunny window with me sitting on top of them…”

p.s. This thoughtful gift came from my friend Shannon. She rolled up bits of vintage sheets and put them in this cute mason jar with a whimsical glittered pig on top. I can’t wait to incorporate this fabric into a quilt which is a goal I have for 2013.

Pink and Aqua. I love this combo. Most of these bits and bobs were found at estate sales too. Ok, now that the wreaths are made, time for some present making! That starts today.

IMG_9525IMG_9522IMG_9524IMG_9528Estate sales are such a great Place to find the odd holiday decoration. This year I happened upon two or three sales that had lots of fun vintage Christmas items. I have been itching for YEARS to put together some wreaths packed with masses of stuff just oozing that “Holly, Jolly Christmas” feeling. For some reason, today was the day. I didn’t plan it to be but I wanted to do something creative and this fit the bill perfectly. I started with a foam form from Michaels, wrapped it in red and white gingham, plugged in the hot glue gun and got busy. It was a blast! Next up, Kitschy Christmas Wreath #2 in an aqua and pink color scheme.

My friend Lisa and I share a love of antiquing, creating, and vintage kitsch among many other things. For Lisa’s birthday I wanted to make her a pennant banner for a play house belonging to her beautiful twin daughters. The curtains in the play house are made of a sweet vintage print so Lisa gave me the remnants from that project and I added to it with prints from my vintage sheet collection. Tiny grosgrain ribbons were added for extra flair. This project was so much fun to make. Here are some pictures of the finished banner hanging in my apricot tree.

Rock sculptures

This summer we went camping at Memorial Park near Pescadero, CA. There is a stream that runs through the woods close to the campsites so we spent some time there swimming and hanging out on the rocky beach. Avery has been a rock collector for as long as I can remember and she collected various rocks and brought them back to our site. She started stacking them creating these beautiful little sculptures. Pretty soon most of us were joining in. Who needs t.v. or cell phones when you have a pile of rocks to play with?!

Collecting crewel work embroidery has been a fun endeavor. Some of it ends up as tote bags, but some of it is just so wonderful, I have to hang it on the wall for everyday enjoyment. This example is definitely one to hang up. I have it in our dining area now. I can’t remember quite where I found it or how much I paid (although I know it was under $10.00). Looking at it close up, you can see how the different stitches were meant to capture the thick paint and brush strokes. I am so glad this beauty found it’s way into our home!

Whooo could resist an owl? I guess I can’t because all of these feathered friends belong to moi! They have been either gifted by understanding friends and family who know my weakness or I have purchased them for myself. I remember as a kid thinking owl stuff was kinda tacky but as I get older, tacky seems to get better. I am not sure why… The following pictures are a small sampling of a larger collection.
