This summer we went camping at Memorial Park near Pescadero, CA. There is a stream that runs through the woods close to the campsites so we spent some time there swimming and hanging out on the rocky beach. Avery has been a rock collector for as long as I can remember and she collected various rocks and brought them back to our site. She started stacking them creating these beautiful little sculptures. Pretty soon most of us were joining in. Who needs t.v. or cell phones when you have a pile of rocks to play with?!

GREAT stone sculptures (cairns). I too like rocks and have brought them home for years, and have cairns around the yard.
Thank you for the correct term. I enjoyed reading this definition on Wikipidia :
Cairn is a term used mainly in the English-speaking world for a man-made pile (or stack) of stones. It comes from the Scottish Gaelic: càrn (plural càirn). Cairns are found all over the world in uplands, on moorland, on mountaintops, near waterways and on sea cliffs, and also in barren desert and tundra areas. They vary in size from small stone markers to entire artificial hills, and in complexity from loose, conical rock piles to delicately balanced sculptures and elaborate feats of megalithic engineering. Cairns may be painted or otherwise decorated, e.g. for increased visibility or for religious reasons.
Your Uncle Bill likes to stack rocks too. He often leaves little arrangements at picnic places for others to find and enjoy, or add to. I love the rock turtle.
I thought you would like the turtle! 🙂
I first learned the term cairn during a long hike to the top of Mt. Washington, in New Hampshire, when I was at camp as a teenager in 1956. There were dozens of various sizes and shapes to mark the trail. It was very comforting to see these rock piles along the way and know I was on the right path. I think I will construct a cairn for our garden. Thanks for the inspiration.
