My friend Margaret asked me to make some new pillow covers for her bedroom pillows a few weeks ago. She gave me the pastel paisley as a starting off point for color. She also mentioned that she liked denim. The light denim curtain panel and the plaid tablecloth from the stash worked well with the paisley. I found the yellow stripe used for the “k” just this week at the Happy Dragon Thrift Store. I love when everything just works out! Here are before and after pictures. Happy to check this project off the list!

This summer we spent a few fun days at my aunt and uncle’s house in Pennsylvania. They live on a large piece of property (compared to California standards) and have an amazing garden and quite a few animals including eight or nine chickens (which by the way provide the most delicious eggs). As a thank you for my aunt Jackie’s hospitality, my mom commissioned me to make her a tote bag. I knew exactly which embroidery I was going to use for this one! I got this piece at the Oakland White Elephant Sale in January. I loved the mid-century look of the design and the odd color combination. I had the corduroy in my stash as well as the unlikely floral fabric. Somehow they all went together in a fun way.

p.s. Here are Jackie’s chickens and the breakfast she made for me!

Autumn wreath

We recently had the outside our our house painted and that has made me want to spruce things up on the porch. I have been itching to make some wreaths to hang on the front door and thought I would start with an Autumn one. The wreath itself came from Savers. I liked the negative space around the wooden sticks so wanted to keep the adornment pretty simple. I pulled all of the orange, gold and brown fabric scraps from my scrap pile and got to work making a small pennant banner for the wreath. I found the little pumpkin in my scrapbooking supplies and also a few other odds and ends to attach to some of the pennants. Next, a Christmas wreath…

Weekend Project #2: I found this little cupboard on the side of the road about a year ago. Thank goodness I was driving the truck when I spotted it! It goes next to our front door and it was just plain brown which was ok, but not great. A coat of glossy black is much better!

Weekend project #1

This weekend I am getting stuff done!!! Tackling that long list of projects!!! It feels great. Some things are fun, others not. I decided to start with a fun one. These chairs came from Salvation Army (and have been stored away for a couple of years). They are comfortable yet not too big. They fit really well in our small dining area. My favorite thing about them was the cut out in the back. I found the velvet upholstery fabric at Goodwill a few months ago. I initially thought it would make good pillows or totes for fall/winter but when I got it home, I thought about how it would look great on those chairs that have been patiently waiting to get some attention. I cleaned up the wood with a little elbow grease then simply covered the cushions with the new fabric. Not much work but a big difference in the dining room!

It started with this “Barn Dance” tea towel I found today at the Goodwill. The colors reminded me of fall and the change of season. They also reminded me of other fabrics in my stash. I pulled them out just to see how they looked together. I will probably never use any of these fabrics together in the same project but I am just drawn to the color combination. Especially with fall right around the corner.
