Archive for August, 2010

I have been wanting to make a pennant banner for a really long time so it was great to finally get this project checked off the list. The scraps of fabric were left over from the patio furniture cushions and there was just enough left to make 13 little flags. I used Wonder Under to fuse the back and front of the flag pieces together. I ran a zig-zag stitch around the edge and then used brown bias tape to string them all together. Now I want to make a red, white and blue version for the 4th of July and that will probably lead to a Valentine’s day one, a Christmas one and then a St. Patrick’s Day and so on…

Butterflies!

Yesterday we visited the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. This trip has been on our list of things to do for a long time so it was great to finally visit. There are so many wonderful things to do and see here but the highlight for me was the magnificent three story glass domed rain forest filled with all kinds of plants and wildlife. School starts in a week so we are getting lots of day trips in before the big day. We headed to San Francisco this morning all bundled up in layers ready for the fog but it was clear as a bell and 87 degrees at 10:30 a.m! Our main destination was the California Academy of Sciences (more on that tomorrow). We left early on purpose to grab a bagel off of Haight Street then head to see the dhalias. These flowers are so spectacular and pure eye candy. This garden has existed since the 1920’s and volunteers help plant, de-bud, de-leaf, de-bug, water, deadhead, and dig out approximately 500 clumps of dahlias. The result is a little piece of Heaven on earth… Enjoy!

A good day to make pillows

As I was doing things around the house on Friday, the kids took it upon themselves to get creative. Avery embroidered a scrap of fabric that was laying around and then turned it into a pillow and Will got ambitious and made a pillow for each member of the family. This was all done with minimal help from me. Will is becoming really good at the sewing machine and Avery can sew on a button all by herself!
